WILLOW – WILLOW Album Review

When Jaden Smith released ERYS, a fight broke out between Keshie and me. Long story short, we couldn’t agree about the quality of the album. I thought it was mediocre with the exception of a few songs while she thought it was a masterpiece. We are yet to agree on that album but WILLOW decided to release her third studio album, WILLOW. I already don’t like ERYS so WILLOW better be good.

WILLOW is the third studio album by WILLOW which consists of 8 tracks. It’s quite a brief listening experience as it ends just under thirty minutes. One thing I would advise you to do when listening to this album is to turn off Shuffle mode. Please. If you really want to enjoy WILLOW, just listen to all the songs in its chronological order. Otherwise, you’ll end up looking like this wondering what the hell is going on.

Trust me, I made that mistake with Solange’s album. The experience was very different when I turned it off. Then again, I feel sorry for the guys who use the free version of Spotify. It will be a confusing experience.

It has been a while since I heard Willow’s music but it didn’t take long for me to figure out the kind of music she is into. The first song, Like a Bird, gave me Erykah Badu, Solange, and Janelle Monae vibes. That’s when I knew I had to turn off Shuffle mode.

So, WILLOW (do I have to write it in caps every time?) is making alternative music. Great, I love alternative music and I certainly love WILLOW. The production is amazing; I like how the album makes it feel like you are doing more than listening to music and its runtime is quite satisfactory.

The highlight has to be WILLOW. Her performances in all of the songs deserve all the praise right now. I wasn’t sure what to expect from her at first but I’m glad I got the chance to listen to what she has to offer. What about the only feature on the album, Jaden? He is surprisingly good in the slow tempo song U KNOW. I can imagine how mad Keshie will be when she reads this. 😁

Not everyone’s kind of music

While I do appreciate how the album is more than a listening experience, not everyone will appreciate this kind of music. I keep getting asked why do I always listen to music outside of the mainstream bracket. The answer is usually the same, mainstream music is whack.

Of course, I’m only writing this review to target fellow alternative music lovers. They will enjoy this album for sure. It will be a challenge to introduce WILLOW’s music to someone who likes club hits.

WILLOW is a great alternative album that has certainly made alternative music lovers happy. So, I love WILLOW more than Jaden. I wonder what Keshie has to say about this. Lol. 8.5/10
