Welcome back to the segment that reviews the top 40 most popular songs in Kenya right now. The data is provided by Apple Music. June has been an interesting month for local music and it only seems to get better in today’s edition. Yes, I am happy that local music is getting more attention in the local charts but I am concerned about the quality of music being given attention. You’re about to see what I’m talking about.
For the newcomers, let me explain how this works. I look at the top 40 songs in Kenya every two weeks. The reviews are done in two sentences. If I reviewed the songs before, I just give the score. For you to see what I said about the song, you have to go back to the previous top 40 posts.
(Hi, if you found this page via Google Search Engine, that’s great. But there are newer posts about the top 40 songs so you can go here and check out the other posts. Okay, thanks)
Everyone caught up? Great. These are the top 40 songs in Kenya as of 25th June 2019.
#40 Drake – Nonstop: 7.5/10
#39 Tyler, The Creator – EARFQUAKE: 9/10
#38 J Cole – MIDDLE CHILD: 8.2/10
#37 Billie Eilish – bad guy: 9/10
#36 DJ Khaled feat Cardi B & 21 Savage – Wish Wish: This song is falling down the charts real quick. 8.5/10
#35 Sauti Sol – Short & Sweet: Well, well. It’s nice to see this song back in the charts. I used to like it and listening to it again made me smile. 9/10
#34 Khalid – Talk: 9/10
#33 Chris Brown feat Gunna – Heat: Can you wait on my full review about Chris Brown’s latest releases? I have so much to say about them but for now, this gets a 6.5/10.
#32 YG feat Tyga & Jon Z – Go Loko: 7.5/10
#31 Burna Boy – Ye: 7.5/10
#30 Meek Mill feat Drake – Going Bad: 7/10
#29 DaBaby – Suge: 6/10
#28 Drake – Omerta: So, the Toronto Raptors won their first NBA championship and the 6 God decided to release a couple of tracks after the historic moment because he’s Drake. Omerta is the first song and I don’t even know why he released this song; it’s just there. 6.8/10
#27 Rayvanny feat Diamond Platnumz – Tetema: 7/10
#26 Miracle Baby feat Shalkido, Masilver, Lexxy Yung & Qoqosjuma – Wamlambez: This song, this song sounds like those songs you used to sing in kindergarten school. It’s so bad but it’s loved by people because of the “Wamlambez Wamnyonyez” phrase. 4/10
Seriously, guys. We can do better than this. There are better songs than this. Not this kind of music. Just look at the artists’ names. How are you supposed to take them seriously?
#25 Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello – Senorita: This fairly new song is okay; I like the collab and the Spanish vibes it gives me. However, I don’t think it’s that good. 7/10
#24 Khalid – Better: 6.8/10
#23 Dave feat Burna Boy – Location: 7.5/10
#22 Koffee – Toast: 8/10
#21 Wiley, Stefflon Don & Sean Paul feat Idris Elba – Boasty: 8/10
#20 Ethic – Pandana: 7/10
#19 NSG – OT Bop: 7/10
#18 Rema – Dumebi: 6/10
#17 Burna Boy – Gbona: 9/10
#16 Chris Kaiga feat Tezzla – Zimenice: 7/10
#15 Diamond Platnumz feat Inama: 8/10
#14 Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber – I Don’t Care: 6/10
#13 Young Thug feat J Cole & Travis Scott – The London: 7/10
#12 Lil Nas X – Panini: Goodness me that EP he released was pure garbage. Every song in that record that wasn’t called Old Town Road was bad; that’s that. 6/10
#11 Lil Nas X feat Billy Ray Cyrus – Old Town Road (Remix): 9.5/10
#10 Lil Nas X & Cardi B – Rodeo: Felt like another attempt at Old Town Road with Cardi B and the result was quite underwhelming. Like he should drop the cowboy gimmick fast. 7/10
#9 Harmonize, Burna Boy & Diamond Platnumz – Kainama: 7/10
#8 Burna Boy – On the Low: 8.5/10
#7 Sauti Sol feat Bensoul, Nviiri the Storyteller, Crystal Asige & Kaskazini – Extravaganza: 9.4/10
Extravaganza was your previous #1 and it has tanked down faster than I expected it to. Which is the new number one song in Kenya?
#6 Chris Brown feat Drake – No Guidance: 8/10
#4 JoeBoy – Baby: 6/10
#3 Burna Boy – Anybody: This is his latest song which means that the album is around the corner. I like the instrumentation of the song and the general vibe. 8/10
#2 Drake feat Rick Ross – Money In The Grave: A better song than Omerta. Then again, did he have to release these songs after the Raptors won because there is no relation whatsoever? 7.8/10
#1 Ethic Entertainment – Figa: I’m not surprised to see it in this position but my opinion of the song doesn’t change. Not one bit. 6/10
