I’m so happy for Kenyan music right now. It was just a couple of months ago when I was complaining about the mediocre songs being put out for us to “enjoy”. I even said that Kenyan music isn’t going in the right direction. However, there have been great songs being released by Kenyan artists like Sauti Sol and Karun. Nikita Kering is added to this list with her brand new song Tragedy.
Tragedy is the latest song by Nikita. Did you know that this isn’t her first song? It makes me feel guilty for sleeping on her. Like damn, which rock have I been living under? What’s even more surprising is the fact that she is only 17 years old. 17!!
emPawa Africa Initiative handles the presentation of the song; a project started by Nigerian singer Mr. Eazi and seeks to promote independent artists. Through the initiative, Mr. Eazi has selected 100 artists to receive $3000 each to create a music video. I mentioned this a while back when reviewing Karun’s single.
Wow. Where do I begin? This is a slow jam with minimal instrumentation and some powerful vocals. I don’t know how to put this, Nikita has a beautiful voice. Beautiful is an understatement. Words are failing me right now. Remember that she is only 17 years old.
I love the fact that we have local artists with actual vocals. Better yet, artists with actual talent. This song makes me so happy and proud to be Kenyan.
The song talks about domestic violence in relationships, an overlooked issue in today’s society. The music video, directed by Enos Olik delivers the message straight home. It also tackles the issue of toxic relationships. She urges the female character not to let him get into her heart and that he doesn’t love her.
Did I mention that she has an amazing voice? I have, haven’t I? 😅
Tragedy by Nikita Kering is a lovely song talking about relatable issues in today’s society and is delivered with amazing vocals. It is becoming extremely hard for me to pick a favorite Kenyan song if great songs like these keep coming up. 9.5/10.
What do you think about Tragedy? I absolutely love it. Let me know what you thought about it in the comments below.
