The long-awaited debut album “WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?” by Billie Eilish was released on Friday March 29th, 2019. “MY BABY, MY CHILD. this album is the world to me please take care of it “, she went ahead to post on her Instagram when making the big announcement.

With 14 songs, 2 being the intro and outro, we can all agree that this is the perfect length for an album. It’s 42 minutes long. Not too long that you get tired of it and not too short to make you ask for more – like this article, just fun and fresh. This is the type of album that gives you closure. Being a Billie Eilish stan, you would expect me to say that I wanted more songs. But no, I felt satisfied. My heart felt full. It was and continues to be a whole experience listening to this work of art.

Produced by Billie’s brother Finneas O’Connell who she’s been working with since forever, the album starts with ‘!!!!!!!’, yes, 7 exclamation marks which you better get right. In this 13 second intro, she says “…I have taken out my Invisalign and this is the album…” followed by her and Finneas sharing a hearty laugh. A laugh I would probably have if anyone said they don’t love this album already.

The main thing that they were trying to achieve with this album is make every song different in its own unique way, which they did. If you put 14 people who like different genres in a room and play this album, everyone will have a favorite song. So, to you who has never listened to Billie Eilish (do you live under a rock or something?), you’ll definitely have a favorite song if not two or five.

Lyrical Themes

Every song on the album is something that happens when you are asleep, from night mares to sleep paralysis to lucid dreams. All things that don’t have an explanation. Like can you explain where we all go when we fall asleep? No one knows. Also, those things more often times than not we think about but cannot say out loud are said in this album. “I’m that bad type, make your mama sad type, make your girlfriend mad type, might seduce your dad type, I’m the bad guy…“, Billie sings on ‘bad guy’. She is the type of artist who says all the things you wouldn’t think of saying out loud and I love that she was cocky and gave off that provoking vibe in that song with some beats you can dance to.

The last song ‘goodbye’ is basically her taking lyrics from all the songs (from the last to the first), a perfect ending to an emotional rollercoaster. The track list is well thought out. The first half of the album will make you feel like you can run the world while the other half will make you cry in public because you’ll be in your feelings. The titles of the last 3 songs are ‘listen before i go’, ‘i love you’ and ‘goodbye’ which is a sentence making us aware that the album is coming to an end.Whispering vocals is one of the things which makes Billie’s songs very unique. In “xanny” she does exactly that over some blown-out bass that would probably break your windows if you played that song out loud. 10/10 would still recommend.

Play this album to your emo kids because Billie Eilish is a role model who will teach you how to deal with your emotions. She wrote ‘8’ from the perspective of someone else. Someone she hurt. The only way she could deal with it was to stop and put herself in that person’s place. Sometimes the only way to deal with the pain or something we are going through is look at it from another person’s perspective.

Now, if you watch “The Office“, a popular American sitcom, you will love ‘my strange addiction’ because it samples vocal snippets from Season 7 Episode 17 of the show. However, the song was most likely named after My Strange Addiction, a show about people with unusual compulsive behaviors.

Depression and sadness have been a theme for most of her songs and she definitely had to bring that back in ‘listen before i go’. ” I’m not okay I feel so scattered, don’t say I’m all that matters, leave me déjà vu…sorry there’s no way out, but down“. This song is what happens when you are sad and you just want to leave this cold world. You will cry when listening to this. Sorry not sorry. This is the type of song I would want played at my funeral.

i love you’ is a first for Billie. She confesses that she feels in love. This song is what happens when you fall in love and you don’t believe it. When someone says they love you and you wish they were trying to make you laugh because you actually love them but you don’t want to because you are not used to these reciprocated feelings.

The Verdict

This album is very well produced. The moody beats, the whispering vocals, the themes covered, the different genres. Perfection. A solid 10/10 to me. It was definitely worth the wait. My top 3 songs at the moment are ‘bad guy’, ‘all good girls go to hell’ and ‘ilomilo’. Billie Eilish gave us what we needed in a debut album. This is the start to a big pop revolution that no one is ready for. Now go listen to it, thank me later. The album is available on all platforms, get it on
