This year has been full of surprises and they keep on coming. Here we have Moment of Truth, a mixtape released by my high school classmate, Bill Kamau or as his stage name Papi Link. I remember him making beats from his desk and making some funny punchlines. Those were good times. Four years later, he has released his first project and it is good. I’m genuinely surprised.
What I like
Let’s just remember that this is a mixtape and not a full release album. I like mixtapes because they bring out the raw element of artists. What I like about Moment of Truth is that it brings out the raw element of Papi Link and it still feels like you’re listening to an album. All I’m trying to say at this point is that the production of the mixtape was well done.
It sounds better than most local songs I hear in matatus or a club. I’m not sure how much it cost but he definitely went for quality sound. As for the beats, I could listen to them everyday. I still have a hard time that it was produced in Kenya. Like have you listened to most Kenyan songs? They sound basic and copy-pasted from other songs. 🤷🏽♂️
Perhaps the highlight of the mixtape is Papi’s rapping skills. He sure can rap. I’ll give him credit for doing an excellent job on the mic. His flow with the beats is near flawless and the features have their moments to shine. Shout out to Chelsea, Roommate, JudAce and Kidd Kron.
What I don’t like
Just a couple of issues that I have with the mixtape. Consider them as personal issues. One, I’m not a fan of his name watermark. Perhaps people like it but I certainly don’t. Yes, I’m aware it’s important for people to be aware of his brand but I’m still not a fan. I’d prefer if the music did the talking.
The other issue is something I brought up in Redsan’s album. I find bragging or making claims of being great unnecessary. The funny thing about Rap music is that it has always been about bragging. I used to like it but it gets old when every rapper talks about how good their life is. What I do know for sure is that the bragging won’t stop any time soon so I should just get used to it.
Despite my issues with the mixtape, I can proudly say it’s a great start for Papi Link’s career. There is definitely more to come from him and I’ll be keen to see his progress. All I can advise Papi is to stay consistent. That’s all he needs to do. I give it a 7.8/10.
