Time to be honest. I never took Ariana seriously as an artist. It mainly had to do with how I was used to her being an actor in Nickelodeon as a silly girl. Slowly but surely though, her music began to catch my attention. Her previous album, Dangerous Woman was a delight and I was really looking forward to seeing where she’ll go next from there. Well, I’m pleased to report that she has taken another step to greatness.
Sweetener is not an album to be remembered for the ages but it is an important album for her after the tragic incident at her concert in Manchester. I’m glad that she remembers the lost ones in this album and also dedicates it to her soon to be husband, Pete Davidson. It’s a sweet album. No pun intended.
What I like
Ariana is a certified hit maker and she certainly doesn’t disappoint in this record. What I love about her is that she tries new music styles that expands her abilities and she kills it. Just mention about Focus because…yeah. We can, however, talk about No tears left to cry which is my favorite track of this record. Her vocals are really put to the test and she makes it look easy. I envy her.
The album is basically RnB with pop elements sprinkled all over it. Not that it’s a bad thing. The production is excellent and simple. I, especially, enjoyed the songs Pharrell produced (The Light is Coming, Blazed, borderline). What I also love about her is how she isn’t afraid to spark controversy like what we saw with her second single God is a woman. Man, all the religious nuts were on her case. I guess it’s safe to say that they are sexist. No? 🤷♀️
Last but most important, it’s not a long album. Thank God. Side note, I really don’t know when I’ll listen to Drake’s album. That long track list is a turn off for me. Back to Ariana, it’s a well-spaced album with a couple of interludes here and there. I enjoyed it and it didn’t overstay its welcome. Kudos Miss Grande.
What I don’t like
Disclaimer: There isn’t much to complain about this album so I’ll be picking on the dumb lyrics used in this record.
Dumb lyrics #1: The light is coming featuring Nicki Minaj
“Now I’m the bad guy, call me Chun Li”
Jesus Christ, Nicki. It’s one thing to be featured in all the pop songs. It got so bad that you had to add Fefe to your track list to boost sales. If that doesn’t sound like desperation, I don’t know what it is. Anyway, she got her facts wrong about Chun Li. She is not a bad person in the video game. Why does Nicki keep saying that? And why are people letting it slide? She is misleading the public. Someone get her a gaming console.
Dumb lyrics #2: borderline featuring Missy Elliot
“Once you taste my ice cream, I bet you won’t ever leave”
Ice cream??? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Oh dear Lord…
Like I said in the disclaimer, there is nothing much to complain about this album. It’s not as memorable as Dangerous Woman but it sure is a step in the right direction. I give it an 8.5/10.
Enough of the pop albums, we are going indie now. Indie album reviews are coming your way very soon and I’m actually excited because I’m getting new headphones. 😂😂😂
